Bernd Hölzenbein, world champion with Germany in his country in 1974, died on Monday night. The veteran Eintracht Frankfurt striker was 78 years old.

Hölzenbein died after a long and serious illness. The 1974 world champion recently suffered from severe dementia. “Bild” was the first to report on this.

Hölzenbein became world champion with Germany in 1974.

The scorer played 420 games in 14 years Bundesliga-Games for Eintracht Frankfurt. He scored 160 goals and became an idol in Frankfurt. Hölzenbein won the UEFA Cup in 1980 and won it three times (1974, 1975 and 1981). Later he became vice-president and was coach of Eintracht until 1992. In 2004 he returned to his favorite club as chief scout.

He also became world champion with Germany in his own country in 1974. Hölzenbein beat them in the final Netherlands a penalty.
