IIn the rape trial of Christian B., who was also a murder suspect in the Maddie case, a witness recounted the days they spent in Portuguese custody together and described incriminating details. The defendant told him that he had held the girl in his house for several days and raped her, the 50-year-old man said at the Braunschweig District Court on Friday. The two men were in prison together in 2006 for stealing diesel and spent a lot of time there together. Both were friends at the time.

The conversations repeatedly referred to the defendant's nightly attacks, during which he stayed in holiday apartments. The witness stated that he knew from visiting B's house that countless passports and other stolen goods were lying there. He noticed that B. was very afraid that the police might search his house while in custody. Therefore, B. instructed the guest in prison to take the passports out of the house. The witness also stated that he gave B. his last money for a lawyer. “He really wanted to get out of there,” she said in court Friday.

In the trial, 47-year-old Christian B. is accused of three counts of rape and two counts of child sexual abuse in Portugal. Between 2000 and 2017, he allegedly tied up and raped a 70-80-year-old woman in her holiday apartment. He allegedly tied a German-speaking girl, aged at least 14, naked to a wooden post and raped her. He is also accused of brutally raping a 20-year-old Irish woman and posing naked and masturbating in front of two 10- and 11-year-old girls.

The German has been in the international media spotlight since it became known that he is being investigated as a suspect in the murder of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared from a Portuguese holiday resort in 2007. A then three-year-old British girl was kidnapped from an apartment in the Algarve state. German investigators believe Madeleine McCann is dead, although no body has yet been found. However, Maddie's case is not the subject of this proceeding and the presumption of innocence applies.
