puppies gardener cody bellinger was knocked out of Monday’s road loss to the stars after suffering a left knee injury following a spectacular defensive play late in the game.
With Houston leading, 6-4, in the bottom of the seventh inning, All-Star Kyle Tucker looked to add to the lead after throwing the first pitch of his at-bat toward the right-center field wall. Bellinger followed Tucker’s fly ball and jumped into the air for a sensational catch on the wall to clinch the final out of the inning.
Shortly after landing, Bellinger’s left knee appeared to buckle, causing him to fall awkwardly to the ground. Cubs teammate Seiya Suzuki asked the training staff to check on Bellinger, who needed help as he walked back to the dugout.
The terrifying crash and subsequent departure of Bellinger forced the Cubs to replace the two-time All-Star with utility man Miles Mastrobuoni. While the initial injury seemed worrisome, Cubs manager David Ross didn’t seem overly concerned after the game, telling reporters that Bellinger will be re-evaluated Tuesday after describing his injury as“nothing greater.”
“We’ll see how he presents himself in the morning, but all the checks that the doctor did, ligaments and so on, seem to be fine,” he added.
Bellinger later echoed Ross’s sentiments about his status. “You think of the worst case right away, but it’s definitely not that, which is good,” he said.according to Cubs reporter Jordan Bastian.

Whether Bellinger will lose time is yet to be known, although any break would be difficult for the 27-year-old given his strong start to the year. He is slashing .271/.337/.493 with seven home runs, 20 RBIs and nine doubles in 37 games; Against Houston, the veteran outfielder went 1-for-3 before leaving.
