That’s not how ColoradoThe story was supposed to end.

Go back to September this season. The buffaloes were the darling of the sports world. Coach Deion Sanders seemed to have orchestrated an overnight turnaround in Boulder, and Colorado jumped out to a 3-0 start.

The Buffaloes, however, returned to Earth slowly and then quickly.

First came the losses against ranked teams: Oregon in an explosion and USC in a nail-biter. Major and minor injuries accumulated. One defeat turned into another.

It all came to a head Friday night in the first half of Colorado’s game against Washington State. The Cougars detonated the Buffaloes, jumping to a 42–7 lead thanks to 14 first downs to Colorado’s five.

The college football universe responded with a collective head scratching.

Many pointed to the Buffaloes’ green offensive line, a weak spot since the start of the season.

In fact, fans and writers alike noted that Colorado had gone the longest way to where most people thought it would go.

The September version of the Buffaloes became an object of nostalgia.

Fans of other Pac-12 teams howled at Colorado’s overexposure.

The Buffaloes’ poor defensive play was evident for all to see.

Topical jokes flew.

Colorado fans felt increasingly disengaged.

Now only a rule of mercy seemed capable of saving the Buffaloes.

Washington State beat Colorado, 56-14.
