The Costco Food Court is one of the most popular fast food establishments in America. They sell well 150 million hot dogs each year, that’s nearly one hot dog for every two people living in America. Costco sells so much pizza it’s one of the the largest pizza chains in the country. And here’s a free hack – while you need a subscription to actually shop at Costco, you can go to the food court without a membership card. But even outside the store, the prices remain correct.

Costco‘s famous hot dog costs $1.50 with a fountain drink. Pizza costs $9.95 for a very large pie.

But the Costco food court is more than just dirty water dogs And sloppy pizza pie. There are often a good dozen other options on the menu on any given day (depending on your location). Which raises the question: What’s the best item on the Costco food court menu?

To find out, I retested everything at my local Costco. A key point we need to keep in mind for this ranking is that the menu is not Exactly the same thing from coast to coast. There are also seasonal variations of certain dishes (like soft serve ice cream). And there is a huge difference between American Costco overseas menus and menu items. In Canada you can buy poutine. Japan has sushi. In England you might see chicken strips and fries. This ranking is only for standard menu items you can get in the United States.

Then there are the food court menu items that we’ve lost over the years. Some of them were loved while others…not so much. Let’s take a look at what’s no longer on the menus. Spot the Sarah McLachlan!

  • Double cheeseburger
  • Costco Fries (Yes, that was a thing for a minute)
  • Turkey Melt Sandwich
  • Acai Frozen Yogurt Bowls
  • Gelato
  • Barbecue Beef Brisket Sandwich
  • Cobb Salad
  • Al Pastor salad
  • Mango Smoothie
  • Spicy Chicken Sandwich
  • Costco chili bowl!
  • The combo pizza!!
  • And… The Hot Dog with Polish Sausage!!!

The loss of Pizza Combo was significant. The slice (and the entire pie) contained pepperoni, sausage, black olives, red onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms. It was glorious. And the Polish sausage hot dog had a garlic-onion vibe like no other. But alas, they are gone.

The rest of us must carry on. Below I rank the current Costco food court menu (this does not include Costco brand hot meals which you can get in the current store). If your local Costco has a slightly different menu… I won’t have those items in this ranking. Apologies in advance, let’s go now!

Check out these other food items from UPROXX:

14. 20 oz. A soda

Price: $0.69

The article:

The soda fountain at Costco is cheap and… that’s it. The mixture of syrup and soda water is very light, resulting in a faint AF fountain of soda pop. Plus, these are just Pepsi products with a very narrow window of options. Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Starry and maybe lemonade are usually the only options. There used to be a root beer fountain, but those days seem to have passed.

Conclusion :

The soda fountain is too heavy on water, even at 69 cents (good) a cup.

Buy or ignore?

Take some water.

13. Roast Beef Sandwich

Price: $9.99

The article:

This new element is confusing. Firstly, it’s not cheap. $10 for a sandwich is a lot, especially at Costco where you can get an entire pizza for the same price. Second, it’s not great. The sandwich consists of “ciabatta” bread with mayonnaise and mustard, lettuce, stewed tomatoes and onion relish with slices of beef.

Conclusion :

The sliced beef is a little gummy and looks processed (it is). The bread is always dry and cold (a terrible combination). The sauces are good but aren’t enough to make up for the lackluster beef and cold/dry bread.

Buy or ignore?

Difficult pass.

12. Cold Brew Mocha

Price: $2.99

The article:

This is the Cold Brew Freeze from Costco with added chocolate syrup. Not bad. There’s a good dose of caffeine and the price seems right.

Conclusion :

Costco’s chocolate syrup is so sweet it makes it a tough drink to swallow, especially since the Cold Brew Freeze is already sweet AF.

Buy or ignore?

Buy it if you need a cocaine-like burst of energy for the next hour.

11. Freezing Cold Brew

Price: $2.99

The article:

This is a standard iced coffee with a nice layer of coffee notes and chocolatey sweetness. It’s very cold, so sip it slowly or get an ice headache with every sip from the straw.

Conclusion :

It’s good. It’s not Starbucks but it gets the job done.

Buy or ignore?

If you need a good caffeine hit, go for it.

10. Twisted Churro

Price: $1.49

The article:

These “twisted” churros braid together chocolate and cinnamon dough before frying. The stick is then sprinkled with a high-sugar cinnamon sugar.

Conclusion :

This is a fried dough covered in sugar (with a hint of cinnamon). It’s good but it’s by no means a good churro.

Buy or ignore?

If you want something sweet that won’t give you an ice cream headache, then get this, I guess.

9. Cheese pizza

Price: $1.99

The article:

This is Costco’s signature pizza. There’s lots of cheese and even more red sauce (it’s very sweet) on a pressed crust. The crust is pretty nice but gets very sloppy to the point of pizza.

Conclusion :

It’s so sloppy. that you’ll need about five napkins to clean yourself up after eating a slice of this pie.

Buy or ignore?

It’s pure comfort food. It’s plastic and too garnished with sweet tomato sauce. As with all pizza, even mediocre pies are still pizza. I would buy if there was no other hot food option at the food court counter.

8. Caesar salad with roast chicken

Price: $6.99

The article:

It’s a big box of romaine lettuce, industrial shredded “parmesan” cheese, croutons, and shredded chicken from leftover rotisserie chicken meat from the back of the store. There is a small cup of Caesar dressing on the side.

Conclusion :

This is an exhausting salad to eat. There are so many – you can easily share them between two people. That said, you’ll need at least two extra cups of dressing to get that Caesar salad vibe right.

Buy or ignore?

I’d say skip unless you really need a huge salad in a pinch. The chicken isn’t bad and provides a good dose of protein so it’s a winner. Just ask for an extra dressing cup.

7. Fruit Smoothie

Price: $2.99

The article:

This is a classic berry smoothie. It’s icy, sweet and full of dark fruit vibes.

Conclusion :

This is a standard, sweet berry smoothie. There’s a nice layer of real berry flavor among all the sweetness. Again, slow down your sips because the cold smoothie will give you an ice headache if you dive too quickly.

Buy or ignore?

Buy. It’s nice and itchy and itchy for something sweet and berry in a smoothie format.

6. Ice cream sundae

Price: $1.99

The article:

This is a standard cup of soft serve vanilla ice cream. That’s it.

Conclusion :

Costco’s soft service is pretty decent but not great. You get a creamy (almost buttery) ice cream feel with a good coating of vanilla. It’s on the lighter end of the spectrum in terms of flavor while still being heavy in the “cream” sense.

Buy or ignore?

This is a nice but very simple treat for a hot day. Buy it if you need to cool down in the heat.

5. Chocolate ice cream sundae

Price: $2.49

The article:

This is Costco’s vanilla soft serve ice cream with a big dollop of their chocolate sauce. The sweetness of the sauce works here since the soft version isn’t too sweet to begin with.

Conclusion :

It’s quite nice and provides a classic counterbalance of vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce from your childhood. Just to be clear, there is nothing superfluous here. It’s just soft serve and chocolate sauce.

Buy or ignore?

Again, if it’s hot and you need a sugar fix, go crazy.

4. Strawberry ice cream sundae

Price: $2.49

The article:

86 Chocolate sauce too sweet and replace it with jammy strawberry sauce (with real chunks of real strawberries).

Conclusion :

Real strawberry sauce takes it to the next level. This is a great dessert whether it’s hot outside or not. Again, the soft version isn’t the best in the world but it works well with this strawberry sauce because it’s plentiful.

Buy or ignore?

This is probably 100% first purchase. Try it, it’s a nice sweet dessert without any frills.

3. Pepperoni pizza

Price: $1.99

The article:

It’s the same sloppy pizza as the cheese pie above. But there’s something going on with the pepperoni. On the one hand, it adds a huge amount of flavor. Second, the pepperoni holds everything together better, making it a much less sloppy cooking experience.

Conclusion :

This is the pizza you want to eat at Costco. This is also a great takeout version since it only costs $9.95 for a huge whole pie.

Buy or ignore?

Buy if you’re craving a sweet/spicy, very cheesy pizza experience.

2. Hot Dog and 20 oz. A soda

Price: $1.50

The article:

It’s the gold standard of the Costco food court menu: an all-beef hot dog in a big bun that you can dress up yourself, accompanied by a soda. It’s quintessential KISS – keep it simple, stupid.

Conclusion :

It’s a good hot dog. I’m ready to die on this hill. The beef frank is well seasoned and has a nice meaty side. Make sure you have a small cup of freshly diced white onion to add to the relish, deli mustard, and ketchup from the bins near the fountain drinks.

Buy or ignore?

100% buy. He’s a big dog and he’ll fill you up.

1. Baked chicken

Price: $3.99

The article:

The Chicken Bake is Costco’s signature dish and a giant hot pocket of sorts. The “baked” is filled with tender white chicken meat, a cheese sauce reminiscent of Caesar dressing, and lots of onion and garlic with a hint of bacon. The bread is then sprinkled with more cheese which melts into the crust and creates a crunchy texture.

Conclusion :

It’s a flavor bomb. If you’re looking for a massive, unique hot pocket with a cheesy, oniony, creamy chicken vibe, this is it.

Buy or ignore?

Buy it. This will fill you up better than anything else on the menu. Plus, it’s a specialty item that stands the test of time and remains a cornerstone of the Costco food court menu.
