Streaming has given us wonderful things that we didn’t even know we needed. baby yodasix seasons of selling sunset, autoplay and almost unlimited television for only $9.99/mo. But not everything has been great. We’ve also been the subject of countless lackluster reboots, six seasons of sunset saleheartbreakingly early cancellations and the inability to know where to actually look at something.

hbo hopes to correct this problem with the release of Max. The new streaming service will act as a combination of HBO Max’s streaming library and the Discovery+ collection of HGTV, Food Network, Animal Planet, TLC, and more. It’s the closest thing we’ve ever seen a reverse-engineered entertainment streamer to a regular cable subscription: a one-stop destination where The idol and Succession live right next to house hunters and Harry Potter. There’s nothing quite like flipping through the cable channels than being able to watch Dr Pimple Popper and the batman in the same window. You may be asking, Why stick with Max when everyone is going to keep calling it HBO? It’s like calling LeBron James just James instead of LeBron. He doesn’t feel well. Yet here we are.

Whatever you call it, Max has made the transition a bit easier for subscribers. Luckily, you won’t have to do much. On May 23, most smart TVs will automatically update the HBO Max app to become Max. Some other devices, like your iPhone, may require you to download the new app. (I did it). But signing in with your HBO, Discovery+, or TV provider accounts will be the same. The price also stays the same, for now. You can still watch the series finales of Succession and barry, also. Another bonus: Max still shows up in your search browser if you type “HBO Max,” which I did today before starting a new food show starring Zooey Deschanel called What I am eating? If that doesn’t say regular TV is back, I don’t know what would.
