European Handball Championship, match for third place

Germany – Sweden

He European Handball Federation opposes record European champions Sweden against the defeat by 30:34 in the semi-final of the European Championship against France refused. This means that the Scandinavians will face the German team in the bronze medal match on Sunday (3:00 p.m./ARD and Dyn) in Cologne.

The protest of the team with the three crowns was directed against the French goal in the last second to make it 27:27. Frenchman Elohim Prandi scored a direct free kick at the end of regulation time and thus saved the French from extra time.

However, in the opinion of the Swedes, the goal was not scored according to the rules. They complained that the referees had omitted possible video evidence to clarify the scene. The EHF said on Saturday that “it is at the discretion of the EHF referees and it is not mandatory to use virtual reality technology.”

Video evidence is only used “if the referees have serious doubts about the correct decision or cannot see the situation correctly.” Not using technology corresponds to the rules “and is considered an objective and, therefore, definitive decision, against which no objection is possible.”

EHF President Michael Wiederer criticized the referees' failure to use video evidence. “It was a mistake,” Wiederer said Saturday at the Euro final press conference.
