Thousands of people are being evacuated from the city of Orsk after heavy rains. In many surrounding towns, houses have already been flooded.

NAfter heavy rain, a dam broke in the city of Orsk, Russia. More than 4,000 houses and about 10,000 people are at risk of flooding in the city near the border with Kazakhstan, the city government said on Friday. Local authorities had asked residents to evacuate several streets, the Tass news agency reported.

According to the Interfax news agency, the city of 220,000 inhabitants is currently working to repair the dam. In the South Orenburg region, where Orsk is located, it recently rained heavily. According to the governor's press service, 1,800 houses have already been flooded and more than 3,000 people have been evacuated in 95 cities.

Russia is regularly hit by extreme weather events, which are exacerbated by climate change.
