FACT CHECK: No, the US government is not going to start recruiting women

The statement is false. A Department of Defense (DOD) spokesperson denied the validity of the claim in an email to Lead Stories. A spokesperson for the Selective Service System also told Check Your Fact that the claim was false in an email.

Amid difficulties with recruiting, the US military is inviting soldiers who refused the COVID-19 vaccine to rejoin, according to Well-informed person. Around 1,900 soldiers received a letter explaining how they could rejoin, the outlet said.

The TikTok video, shared almost 93,000 times, purports that the United States government will begin recruiting women for the military. “What would happen if your son was drafted into war?” the video begins. Then a man appears on screen and goes on an expletive-laden rant about why the U.S. government isn’t drafting his daughter into the military.

“Let me get this right. You want to pass a law to draft my daughter and send her to another one of your damn foreign wars for something you created so your weapons manufacturers can make more money for your banker friends,” the man says. .

However, the claim is false. The DOD has not issued a Press release on their website nor an official statement published on their verified site social media accounts that support the claim. Likewise, the White House has not made a public statement that the United States government is going to start recruiting women for the army. Additionally, the Selective Service System, the government agency responsible for the draft, has not responded to the claim made in TikTok video. Additionally, Check Your Fact found there is no credible news suggesting that women will be drafted into the US military.

A DOD spokesperson denied the validity of the claim in an email to Top Stories.

“DOD is not in any way processing a plan or decision regarding the recruitment of women,” the spokesperson told the outlet.

Robert Kenny, a spokesman for the Selective Service System, also told Check Your Fact that the claim was false in an email.

“There have been no Selective Service discussions with any other federal agency about reinstating the draft or expanding registration or the draft to women,” Kenny said.

“We are a preparedness organization and continually work with federal and state partners on ‘hot standby’ to ensure the Selective Service System is prepared to mobilize during a national emergency if requested by the President and Congress.”

“Among our top priorities is ensuring that all men, ages 18 to 25, are aware of the Selective Service registration requirement and take steps to register to protect their access to federal and state jobs and federal job training opportunities; as well as citizenship for young men entering the US seeking citizenship,” Kenny added.
