Carlo von Tiedemann, former famous presenter and NDR legend, faces uncertain times. He currently lives in a nursing home, but is slowly running out of financial resources to afford long-term accommodation.
Carlo von Tiedemann (80) led formats such as “Current Hour”, “Laughing with Fun” and the live talk show “DAS!”. But after all his success on television, he is now sounding the alarm. After barely surviving a bacterial infection in his coronary arteries, he broke a vertebra in the hospital. He had to go to a clinic and rehabilitation for three months. He now lives in a nursing home, but that costs the former television star a lot of money. Too much money.
“I am self-employed at NDR. “You won’t get a cent.”
Since April 10, Tiedemann has been living in a room in the “Haus im Bramautal” in the town of Doll, Schleswig-Holstein, with 4,500 inhabitants. That has its price. “It's not nice. We are now talking about four months of loss of service. “You have to use reserves,” said the moderator. “I have never had great wealth. Luckily there are reservations. But little by little they are being attacked.”
He says they will reimburse him for 40 percent of his expenses. The grim prognosis: “I could barely afford to stay in bed for another six months. I am self-employed at NDR. Now you won't get a single cent.” However, in the eighties and nineties he earned up to 10,000 euros a month.

He has great respect for the fact that many people in his house work for the well-being of the residents. “The nursing shortage should concern us all. Congratulations to the people who help others here day and night. […] Our night nurse usually has to care for 30 people. There are people who can no longer turn around on their own. I never want to go there. “So I said: 'Give me the Ballon d'Or.'”
The new everyday life of Carlo von Tiedemann
Their daily life there is strictly regulated. Carlo von Tiedemann informs “Bild”: “I wake up at 6 in the morning. Breakfast is served from 7 am Bread, sausage, cheese. Then I read the newspaper. Then you go to therapy with a physical therapist. She is really tormenting me, but I will accept it.”
Despite the rigorous rehabilitation program, the presenter does not want to give up. She has a goal: “I want to return home soon, return to the microphone. My listeners miss me. It’s nice when they need you.” She trains the muscles of the arms and legs for 90 minutes. She currently finds it difficult to climb stairs, like “Mount Everest,” as he says.
He also receives support from his family. His wife Julia (57) and his daughter Viktoria (20) come in the afternoon. Tiedemann: “You visited me every day. That helps a lot.”
