Bob Gist, a 61-year-old insurance worker from Arkansas, was fishing with friends on Lake Grenada in Mississippi. “We drove about a half mile from our original spot to another spot and started fishing when we suddenly heard dogs barking,” Gist told the New York Post.
Shortly afterward they discovered dogs in the water. It was later learned that the dogs were part of an annual fox hunt that takes place in the area.
The dogs swam in different directions.
At first they tried to ignore the situation and continue fishing, Gist told Fox News. But then they approached the animals. They quickly realized that there were dogs everywhere, swimming in different directions because they could no longer see the shore.
The men brought on board as many dogs as possible to save them from drowning. When the men brought the dogs to shore, they found their owners panicking. With the help of a GPS transmitter, they were able to rescue four other dogs that were more than a kilometer from the coast. “They almost drowned because they had been hitting the water for an hour,” Gist said.
