The former mayor of Sousel, Armando Varela, died this Sunday afternoon, after the motorcycle he was traveling on crashed, a source from the party told the Lusa agency.
A source from the Alto Alentejo Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command indicated that the alert for the accident was given at 1:30 pm, and the same happened on National Road (EN) 370, in the Union of Parishes of Alcórrego and Maranhão, in the municipality of Notice
Armando Varela, 57, was mayor of Sousel elected by the PSD between 2005 and 2017. He ran again for the position in the last municipal elections, but lost to the socialist Manuel Valério.
In the last municipal term, Armando Varela served as councilor in the Chamber of Portalegre, also elected by the Social Democrats.
Armando Varela also held the position of chairman of the PSD District Political Commission of Portalegre, between 2016 and 2019.
According to the Alto Alentejo Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, 13 operatives were involved in the relief operations, assisted by six vehicles, including the Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicle (VMER) from Portalegre and an Ambulance from Immediate Life Support (IVS) from Ponte de Sor.
