FA place reminiscent of Jina Mahsa Amin could soon come to Rankfurt. Local Advisory Board 3 unanimously requested on Thursday to dedicate a space at the entrance to the previously unnamed Günthersburg Park north of Rohrbachstrasse to a symbolic statue of the Iranian protest movement. A young Iranian woman died in Iran in 2022 after being beaten by the police. The trigger was that, according to the moral watchdog, she had worn her headscarf carelessly.

The initial initiative to rename Raimundstrasse, on which the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran is located, failed for several reasons. Renaming the street brings too many disadvantages to the residents. In addition, large costs are incurred, which only seem appropriate when the previous namesake no longer seems affordable, for example due to the involvement of National Socialists in crimes.

A “special sign” for hundreds of Iranians living in the northern end

The initiative to run for the local advisory council came from Claudia Ehrhardt, head of the CDU parliamentary group, who, according to her, has been in contact with the Iranian community for a long time. He points out that Nordend is characterized by more residents of Iranian origin than other districts. Already in 2020, and therefore before the last wave of departures, 450 of them lived in this part of the city.

In addition, some well-known Frankfurt residents with Iranian roots lived in Nordend, such as the mayor Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg (Greens) and the fashion seller Kaweh Nemati, who ran for the CDU in the state elections. Green Party Federal Chairman Omid Nouripour, who moved from Iran to Frankfurt as a teenager, is also a directly elected member of the Bundestag for Nordend. “It would be a special symbol for these fellow citizens if we remembered Jina Mahsa Amin in Nordend,” says Ehrhardt.

It also creates the desired local reference for naming streets and squares. Günthersburgpark is also located in the center of the city, and the square is a suitable meeting place for Jina Mahsa Amin memorial events. The name also corresponds to newer names of places where Nordend especially respected women fighting for equality.

The local advisory board, which has the right to name streets and squares according to the municipal code of Hess, in its finally jointly prepared and unanimously approved application, also expressed the wish that the schedule stipulated in the city's manual could be waived exceptionally. street naming: This stipulates that the namesakes of streets or squares must be dead three years before the application is made. Cities like Berlin and Hanover are already further away: there are already street signs commemorating Amin.
