Ghostwriters Carry A Burden: They Know Much Of Their Writing Is Not True: Peter Bart – Deadline

What do writers do when they can’t write? It’s an infuriating question, since some write anyway, even in a risky way.

The risky activities of a striking writer deserve attention because he is a “ghost” who is breaking a main rule of his “ghost” fraternity: he is speaking openly about the secrets of his trade.

Ghostwriting can be both rewarding and punishing. Ghost books aren’t specifically banned by guilds in times of discord, but ghosts know that much of what they write has another problem: It’s actually false. Or at least distorted.

All this is vividly recognized by J. R. Moehringer, which is a serial ghost. His most recent effort, Replacementabout prince harry — was written before the writers’ strike — graces the best-seller list amid passionately challenging reviews.

Far from hiding from the controversy, Moehringer has written an article to the new yorker describing his fights with his subject and his general misgivings about his “hacky, shady and whimsical” profession.

I’ve met many “hacky” ghosts over the years, including those first tempted into the trade due to strikes. I’ve personally been offered ghost jobs: a famous character in a movie declared early on that he intended to tell me a torrent of lies that he expected me to eloquently immortalize. I objected.

Moehringer admits that some of the information in his memoirs has been disputed, except for one he wrote about himself. Noble a tender barbecame a moving little movie starring Ben Affleck and directed by George Clooney (watch the trailer here).

Affleck played an alcoholic character who doesn’t exist in the memoir. And Clooney treated Moehringer as if he were a real ghost; she didn’t even offer to meet him.

Moehringer’s work has won much praise several times, such as with Open, the memoirs of Andre Agassi (who wrote Moehringer). Some ghosts like Michelle Burford or Daniel Paisner have ghosted dozens of books, but unlike Moehringer, most members of the fraternity never write or talk about the process.

The memoirs and autobiographies, of course, often claim to be written by himself. Some become jokes, no doubt, because “his ‘authors’ of him may have the bricks but they could never erect a building,” as Burford explains.

Some show business “memoirs” became instantly famous due to their ridiculous exaggerations and fabrications. The one by producer Jerry Weintraub, for example, is titled When I stop talking, you’ll know I’m dead. He lived up to his title.

In Replacement, which earned Moehringer a whopping million-dollar advance (and perhaps $20 million for his theme), Moehringer was careful to warn the prince early on that “this is not the story of your life; it is a story carved out of a particular series of events chosen because they have the greatest resonance to the widest variety of people.”

Harry was resistant to some of his ghost’s approaches; he also had his angry outbursts with Harry. “For the thousandth time in my ghostwriting career, I had to remind myself, ‘This isn’t your fucking book AND it’s not about your mother,’ it’s about someone else,” explains the ghost.

Moehringer is sensitive to his reviews, to be sure. He is especially annoyed by a review written by a fellow ghostwriter who described Harry as “very crazy” and criticizes Moehringer for being too literary: “all Sartre or all Faulkner.”

Does a ghost end up liking his theme? Prince Harry (Duke of Sussex) is in dispute with three London tabloids. he also had a recent confrontation with photographers In New York. Last week lost a legal battle in London for his request to pay for his own police protection in Britain.

Despite occasional spats about the book, Moehringer insists its publication ended with hugs and a special thank you to Meghan Markle for gifting toys to her ghost’s children.

Their final understanding, of course, was an agreement that “ghosts don’t talk. To which the ghost added: “Well, maybe they can; maybe sometimes they should.”

So he did.
