Good Friday is an important religious holiday in the Christian calendar that commemorates the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. In Germany it is not only a public holiday, but also a silent holiday. This means that no events will be held on this day, out of respect for the historic day of mourning and remembrance.

In large cities, for example, the Edeka at Munich central station and the Rewe at Cologne central station are open. You can find a complete list here:

• Edeka at Lichtenberg train station: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Edeka at Friedrichstrasse train station: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
• Edeka at Südkreuz train station: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Denn's Eco Market at Gesundbrunnen Train Station: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Rewe at Ostbahnhof: 6:00 a.m. to midnight

Munich

• Edeka at the main train station: from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
• Edeka at Ostbahnhof from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Cologne

It is definitely advisable to find out in advance if these stores are actually open.

The shops are open on Easter days.

• Holy Thursday: Maundy Thursday is not a holiday, so all supermarkets are open.
• Good Friday: Good Friday is a holiday. That's why supermarkets and pharmacies are closed.
• Holy Saturday: The shops are open because Holy Saturday is not a public holiday in Germany.
• Easter Sunday: On Easter Sunday, public holiday rules apply and all shops are closed.
• Easter monday: Supermarkets and all other shops are also closed on that day.
