“This law appears in a context marked by the return of war to Europe, in which NATO and EU member countries face threats and challenges in their defense dimension that reinforce the need to modernize and enhance the Armed Forces, allowing them to fulfill the planned missions and the commitments assumed, both within the scope of multilateral relations and within the scope of the bilateral support requested from Portugal”, reads the communiqué released at the end of the meeting.
The Government also approved the proposal for a Law on Military Infrastructures, which establishes the programming of investment in the conservation and maintenance of buildings and other properties belonging to the Armed Forces for the next 12 years. In the statement, the Government anticipates that this instrument will allow “to continue the pursuit of other public policies such as the transfer of properties for affordable rent”.
The two bills will be delivered to the Assembly of the Republic and, in order to be made viable, they need to be approved by an absolute majority of deputies, 116.
Regarding the proposed Military Programming Law, the Government also highlights that the diploma will establish investment in research and development with “direct impact on building military capabilities”.
