Tony Allen is familiar with the problems and pressure that grizzlies star ha morant currently facing after his latest off-court incident.

A week ago, Morant appeared flashing a gun during an Instagram live video and is currentlysuspended of team activities pending NBA investigation. The recent Morant incident comes after served an eight-game suspension in March when an Instagram Live video showed Morant brandishing a gun inside a Colorado nightclub.

Known as “The Grindfather” for his elite defensive skills, Allen played an integral role in the Grizzlies’ “Grit and Grind” era from 2010 to 2017. In a recent appearance on Kevin Garnett’sKG certified podcast, Allen shared his advice on why Morant’s need for a gun shouldn’t be taken lightly.

“I will definitely tell him [Morant] Guns are not one of those things you play with,” Allen said on the show. “…I just think if you have that fear of holding a gun, you should need a lot of security. … You have to be properly planning your moves. … When you’re out and about, man, and you definitely think you need a gun or you need to go to places you need a gun, you may not need to go to those places. I say this from experience.

Allen was a six-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection during his days in a Grizzlies uniform. He also won an NBA championship in 2008 with the Celtics. While Allen has witnessed the pinnacles and valleys of being an NBA player, the 41-year-old wants to help Morant avoid some of the pitfalls he endured.

Allen said he has tried to communicate with the 23-year-old and has spoken with his father, Tee Morant, on multiple occasions to offer guidance and support.

“I reach out to his father every day,” Allen said. “I tell him, ‘Hey man, I’m in your corner. I’m around. I’m here if you need me.’ I’ve been through some of everything he’s trying to portray. It can get tough.”

As the league continues its investigation, Morant could face an “extended suspension” from the NBA regarding the situation.
