Like “Hartz and Warm”, “Hartz Red Gold – Poverty Map Germany” also deals with people who live on the edge of subsistence and mostly live in socially disadvantaged areas. This also includes Weißenfels in Saxony-Anhalt. Unemployment, social neglect and crime prevail in the city. In Weißenfelser Neustadt, every fourth citizen lives on the money. At the end of the 1980s, Weißenfels rose to a leading position in footwear production in the GDR. After reunification, however, the industry collapsed. The city is still struggling with this problem today – it is noticeable in the cityscape.
