Dhe commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard used the memorial service for Mohammad Reza Zahedi, one of his highest-ranking officers, to once again threaten Israel with retaliation. “Our bravest men will punish the Zionist regime,” Hossein Salami told an audience of thousands on Friday. “The regime is vulnerable and knows what will happen.” Zahedi was killed on Monday in a suspected Israeli airstrike in Damascus along with his deputy and five other revolutionary guards. The decision to retaliate has been made, said former Vice President Mohsen Razaei, according to the Tasnim news agency. “It will definitely be put into action.”

The funeral service fell on a symbolic day. Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iran has staged a show of force against Israel every year on the last Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan, Al-Quds Day (Jerusalem Day).
