TORONTO – Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was not in the starting lineup for Thursday’s game against the New York Yankees because of soreness in his right knee.

The first baseman was hurt Tuesday night when he fielded a bunt. Day to day is considered.

Guerrero was feeling better and has been doing running drills and batting cage work, Toronto manager John Schneider said at a pregame news conference at Rogers Center.

Third baseman Matt Chapman was slated to move up to Guerrero’s regular No. 3 position in the batting order. Brandon Belt was signed to play first base and hit seventh.

Guerrero, who is hitting .312 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs, could be available as a pinch depending on how he feels on the night, Schneider added.

Reliever Mitch White (elbow) and Adam Cimber (rhomboid) returned to the team after spending time on rehab assignments with Triple-A Buffalo.

Both players will be checked by the coaching staff on Thursday, Schneider said.

There was no word on when they might be activated from the disabled list.
