BVB professional Emre Can will replace the sick Aleksandar Pavlovic in the DFB squad for the European Championship at home. However, national coach Julian Nagelsmann's decision was not well received by many fans.

That's bitter for Aleksandar Pavlovic (20)! As the DFB As announced in a statement on Wednesday (June 12, 2024), the Bayern youngster will miss the 2024 European Championship due to an infection.

At the same time, national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) announced who will replace the 20-year-old at the local Euro: BVB captain Emre Can (30). This was not to the liking of many fans of the German team.

DFB: Fans criticize appointment of BVB captain Emre Can

Under the instagramThe DFB's publication was met with criticism from all sides. “No one, but no one understands this decision” and “God, this is a bad decision” were just some of the many negative comments.

Many users would have preferred other players to replace Pavlovic. “Stiller, Goretzka… that's a bad joke,” wrote one fan. Another commented: “I would have preferred to see Goretzka a thousand times.”

Some, in turn, defended Can's candidacy. “Yes Goretzka, yes Stiller. But Nagelsmann also has something on his mind. “He wants a certain type of player,” wrote one user.

Nagelsmann explained the decision as follows: “We want another six in the team and that is why we have decided to nominate Emre Can. He immediately expressed his enthusiasm and willingness to join the team. We wanted to have a player in the squad who has played many games and knows how to deal with pressure. He may fit the profile we need now.”

Although Can reached the Champions League final with BVB last season, he had a mixed season with the black and yellow team. In the Bundesliga Dortmund only reached fifth place and Borussia was eliminated from the DFB Cup in the round of 16 against VfB Stuttgart (0-2).

For many fans, the BVB captain is too inconsistent in his performance. Furthermore, Bayern professional Leon Goretzka (29) and Stuttgart player Angelo Stiller (23) have had a much more stable season than the 30-year-old.

One thing is clear: Can will have to be content with a place on the bench at the European Championship. Both Robert Andrich (29) and Toni Kroos (34), as well as Pascal Groß (32), are likely to be preferred for the position.
