Marcelo maintains confidence in the Chief of the Navy after the failed mission of the Mondego ship

“It so happens that the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces is the one who appoints the military leaders and, therefore, a military leader who is in office has the confidence of the President of the Republic, in addition to having that of the Government that proposes this appointment”, declared.

The head of state was speaking upon arrival in Madeira, where he will participate, on Saturday, in the closing of the Congress of Portuguese Judges and in the inauguration of the Madeira delegation of SEDES – Association for Economic and Social Development, in Funchal.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa indicated that he does not intend to visit the NRP (Ship of the Portuguese Republic) Mondego, which failed on Saturday night to accompany a Russian ship north of the island of Porto Santo, in Madeira, because 13 of the garrison’s soldiers (four sergeants and nine privates) refused to board for security reasons.

“We are talking about an ongoing process. We are in a democratic rule of law and this must be respected. What should have been done was done. Check the actual circumstances. Now, listen to those involved. And then act accordingly,” he explained.

“That’s why I don’t visit the ship, nor do I walk around the ship’s surroundings,” he assured.
