Mick Jagger and more pay tribute – Deadline

the news that Tina Turner passed away today sparked a quick reaction from some of the biggest names in music, sports, television and politics.

President Joe Biden issued a statement Wednesday afternoon:

Before I was the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner she was the daughter of a farmer in Tennessee. As a child, she sang in the church choir before becoming one of the most successful recording artists of all time.

With 12 Grammy Awards, she was the only woman to win in the pop, rock and R&B categories, a sign of her versatility, creativity and broad appeal. Millions flocked to her concerts. Her high-octane dance performances were legendary. And her iconic hits, including “Proud Mary,” “The Best,” “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” continue to be treasured and sung loud by generations of fans.

In addition to being a once in a generation talent that changed American music forever, Tina’s personal strength was remarkable. Overcoming adversity and even abuse, she built a career to go down in history and a life and legacy that were entirely her own.

Jill and I send our love and prayers to her husband Erwin, the rest of the Turner family, and fans around the world who are mourning today the woman they say was “simply the best.”

Biden’s former running mate Barack Obama wrote: “Tina Turner was raw. She was powerful. She was unstoppable. And she was herself unapologetically, speaking and singing the truth of her through joy and pain; triumph and tragedy.

Mick jagger, a regular Turner contributor, wrote on Twitter: “So saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny, and generous. She helped me a lot when she was young and I will never forget her”.

Dionne Warwick said in a statement: “Another long-time friend had made her transition. Not only will I miss that eternal ball of energy named Tina Turner, but the whole world will also find this emptiness in their lives. My condolences to her husband and other members of her family. Rest in peace my friend!”

Angela Bassett, who earned a memorable Oscar nomination for playing Turner in What does love have to do with it?shared a long statement with Deadline saying in part: “Her last words to me, to me, were: ‘You never imitated me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed it to the world. I will keep these words close to my heart for the rest of my days. I am honored to have known Tina Turner.”

Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson said: “I loved Tina, her voice and energy, she was one of the greats. ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ will always be one of my favorite songs. And nothing beats her version of ‘Proud Mary’. I also loved her musical. Love and Mercy.”

Courtney B. Vance praised Turner as a “Hero. Revolutionary. pioneer. Icon. Mother. Wife” in a statement through her publicist. “We knew that she would arrive this day.
