Nuno Borges advanced to the quarterfinals of the Arizona Challenger, in the United States of America, this Friday.
The 26-year-old number one in Portuguese tennis, ranked 80th in the ATP ranking, defeated Russian Roman Safiulin, number 113 in the world hierarchy, in two sets, by 7-5 and 6-4.
In the first round, the maiato had reached the first victory over a tennis player from the world “top-50” – the “victim” was Argentine Diego Schwartzmanncurrent number 38 in the world and first seed in the tournament.
Nuno Borges, who still hasn’t lost a single “set” in Phoenix, will now face the Australian Alexei Popyrin, 101st ATP.
The Arizona Challenger has a very strong field of players, taking into account the category of the tournament, due to the fit between the two Masters 1000 – Indian Wells and Miami – which take place in March in the USA.
Matteo Berrettini, Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet, Emil Ruusuvuori, Jiri Lehecka, Mikael Ymer and Alexander Bublik are some of the big names to compete in the tournament, until Sunday.
