May 1 is a public holiday throughout the Federal Republic. Therefore, shops generally remain closed. However, there are some exceptions to this rule: If you absolutely have to buy a few things for the refrigerator on Labor Day, there's a good chance you'll find what you're looking for, especially in big cities. There are several supermarkets here that are open 365 days a year.
