Christopher Nolan’s films usually suck up tons of money – unless they are published at the height of a unique public health crisis – but Oppenheimer it always sounded (and honestly, still feels) like a tough sell. It lasts three hours. It’s a dark film about a dark subject. It’s mostly men in the rooms talking (or yelling at) each other. And yet, thanks in part to all that “Barbenheimer” jawit has now reached another major milestone at the box office.

By The wrapThis weekend Oppenheimer added another $12 million to its already sizable worldwide haul. This brings the total to $912,701,115, about $2 million more than Bohemian Rhapsodywhich grossed a whopping $910,809,311 in 2018. That means it’s been usurped an important title: the highest-grossing biopic of all time.

(Sorry to be picky, but this total is not adjusted for inflation. Even over just five years, Bohemian RhapsodyThe total inflation, taken into account, increases to $1.1 billion. But Oppenheimer is still in theaters, so who knows? Maybe that will add another $100.00 million or so to his haul.)

Of OppenheimerThat’s $912 million, of which $318.6 million comes from the good old United States. It should be noted that Bohemian Rhapsody “only” made $216 million nationally five years ago, and even if you don’t take inflation into account, it’s so close OppenheimerIt’s total. American audiences would clearly prefer to see an epic about the father of the atomic bomb rather than the film about the singer of a band later immortalized by a SNL movie.
