These positions were assumed by Paulo Raimundo in an initiative organized by JCP entitled “Building a green future”, which took place today at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, and which consisted of a simulation of an environmental court in which the defendant was capitalism .

After hearing the prosecution and defense of the defendant, Paulo Raimundo sentenced: “It is capitalism that is sitting in the dock because it is responsible for the environmental crimes we are witnessing”.

“For capitalism, the well-being of populations, the preservation of nature, the defense of sea and ocean ecosystems, forests or soils are of little value. What counts first is the profit, then the profit and at the end of it all, the profit”, he accused.

In the opinion of the communist general secretary, “there is no defense of the environment without social justice and social justice is not possible within the framework of capitalism”.

“Capitalism is not, never was, and never can be green!” he exclaimed.

In a speech in which he established the “search for profit” as being the main reason “for the majority of carbon dioxide emissions”, Paulo Raimundo considered that the problems linked to climate change “cannot be solved because their resolution is not compatible with the goals of those who want to dominate the world”.

“Objectives based on dependency, on unfair relations and profound inequalities between over-exploited countries and capitalist powers, particularly by the United States of America and the European Union”, he stressed.

Despite this, Paulo Raimundo stressed that the denunciation of capitalism’s climate inability should not be “exhausted in generalist proclamations and catastrophic visions”, but rather translate into the demand for “concrete measures”.

Among these measures that the PCP requires to be taken at national level, Paulo Raimundo highlighted the need for “more means for public structures in terms of planning, ordering and environmental intervention”.

“The Government may well announce more funds for the Ministry of the Environment. They are fundamental, but they have little practical effect if they are not accompanied by a change in policies”, he defended, calling for the hiring of personnel at the General Inspection of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Territorial Planning or at the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests.

In the same vein, the secretary general of the PCP considered it necessary to ensure “public control of strategic sectors, such as the energy sector”, considering that the sale of dams by EDP or the closure of the Matosinhos refinery by Galp show “the need and the urgency of making these companies respond to the needs of the country and not to the shareholders”.

For the entire territory, the communist leader also defended the need for “sustainable mobility policies, which give centrality to quality public transport” and which “invest seriously in the railroad”.

“We need to guarantee public control of water, increase its efficiency (…) and we need more measures to adapt to the effects of climate change on the national territory”, he stressed.

In front of several dozen young people who were listening to him, Paulo Raimundo defended that, in order to build a “truly green, sustainable and lasting future”, an “alternative patriotic and left-wing policy is needed in the short term and, in the long term, socialism and the communism”.

“In order to achieve that green future that we so much desire and need, we need to follow a path that is not green, it is a red path”, he stressed.

Moments before Paulo Raimundo’s intervention, several JCP militants went up to the platform of the improvised court to, before two young ‘judges’ dressed in black, make various accusations against capitalism for ‘climate crimes’, such as food waste, water management or public transport.

At the end of the session, after reading an ironic defense of capitalism, the sentence defined by the ‘judges’ was summary: “Capitalism is declared guilty”.
