Half of the 2023 PGA Championship has been completed with surprising names at the top of the standings. Corey Conners and Viktor Hovland are tied for the lead at five under par as they each seek their first major championship. Also atop the 2023 PGA Championship leaderboard, however, is a player familiar with this position, World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler. Others remaining on the 2023 PGA Championship course at Oak Hill Country Club include Bryson DeChambeau (-3) and two-time PGA champion Brooks Koepka (-2).
Defending champion Justin Thomas just made the cut with 5 or better, as did Jordan Spieth. Thomas is a +100,000 long shot to repeat in the final odds of the 2023 PGA Championship at Caesars Sportsbook. The favorite for the 2023 PGA Championship is Scheffler (+130), followed by Hovland (+400), Conners (+650) and Koepka (+800). With so many experienced players at the top of the 2023 PGA Championship standings, you’ll want to check out PGA Tour predictions from the tested computer model at SportsLine before you lock in your 2023 PGA Championship picks for the remaining two rounds.
Our proprietary model, created by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model has raised more than $8,800 in its best bets since the restart, winning tournament after tournament.
McClure’s model predicted that Jon Rahm would finish on top of the rankings at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model surpassed the second big win of Rahm’s career before the weekend. Rahm was two shots off the lead going into round three, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also saw Scottie Scheffler win in 2022.
Additionally, the model included JT Poston in his best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet came to +5,500, and throughout the tournament, McClure’s best bets netted nearly $1,100. McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was listed as an unlikely 40-1 possibility.
This same model has also achieved a whopping nine majors before the weekend. Anyone who has followed him has seen massive returns.
Now that the cut has been made at the 2023 PGA Championship, SportsLine simulated the final two rounds 10,000 times, and the results were astounding. Head over to SportsLine now to see the projected 2023 PGA Championship leaderboard.
Best PGA Championship 2023 Predictions
A big upset the model is asking for at the 2023 PGA Championship: Conners (13-2), a two-time PGA winner and one of the co-leaders heading into the weekend, stumbles down the stretch and barely falls between the first five. The Canadian has had success at the Masters with three top-10 finishes at Augusta National, but that success hasn’t spilled over to the other majors. Through 11 career starts at the other majors, Conners hasn’t had a top-10 finish.
Conners’ biggest struggle is on the greens, where he ranks outside the top 100 on tour in strokes gained. He did well with his putter for the first two rounds, but that was when the spotlight wasn’t on him. Now, as a co-leader, there will be pressure on every putt and he hasn’t shown that he can rise to the occasion in those situations at the majors. With big names at the top of the leaderboard, including some with specializations on their resumes, the model sees other 2023 PGA Championship golfers at better value this weekend.
Another surprise: Patrick Cantlay, an unlikely 45-1, makes a fine run for the title. He enters the weekend six shots back, but is a proven performer. Cantlay was the 2021 PGA Tour Player of the Year and also won the FedEx Cup Championship that year.
Cantlay is tied for 19th in the 2023 PGA Championship going into the weekend, but he has three straight top-15 finishes in the majors. He also found his rhythm in the second round, shooting 3-under, the second-highest score of the day. Cantlay holds the top 10 rankings in strokes won from tee to green (1.406), strokes won off tee (.903) and putting average (1.705). See who else to choose here.
How to make selections for the 2023 PGA Championship
The model points to three other golfers with odds of 45-1 or better who will make amazing runs. Anyone who endorses these long shots could succeed. You can only view the model’s PGA Championship selections here.
