Title 42 is set to expire Thursday night, a pandemic-era rule that allows the US government to turn away asylum seekers at the border as a public health measure. This comes at a time when border apprehensions are already in all-time highs and the Americans give President Biden some of their lower ratings about his handling of immigration.
According to Gallup, Americans say immigration is the third biggest problem in front of the country, behind the economy and poor leadership. And the number saying that the level of immigration in the US should be reduced has doubled to 40 percent since Biden took office.
In this installment of FiveThirtyEight Politics podcastGalen talks to the Georgetown economics professor Ana Maria Mayda about what Americans think about immigration and why, its impacts on the US and its policy, and how it compares to other countries.
