The Government approved this Thursday, March 15, in the Council of Ministers, an extraordinary support for the payment of rents for families with high effort rates and with lease or sublease contracts for permanent housing that have been concluded until the day of today. This measure comes into force from June with retroactive effect in January and aims to help families with housing expenses.

Who can benefit from this measure?

All households with effort rates above 35%, up to the sixth step of the IRS (38,632 euros of annual taxable income), with lease or sublease contracts for permanent housing, concluded until this Thursday and which have duly registered with the Tax and Customs Authority.

What is the value and duration of this support?

Over the next five years, all eligible households will receive up to a limit of 200 euros, which corresponds to the difference between the actual effort rate and the maximum effort rate of 35%. This amount is distributed every month and automatically, and at the end of each year the situation of each beneficiary family is reassessed. There are no income ceilings by typology that limit the attribution of this support.

How is the amount to be paid calculated?

For example, a couple with two children, whose monthly income is 2,500 euros and pays an income of 1,200 euros, receives support of 200 euros per month. In turn, a single-parent family, with a monthly income of 1,500 euros and an income of 700 euros, support is 175 euros.

In the case of couples with a child and whose monthly income is 1,750 euros, with an income of 800 euros, the support received will be 188 euros per month.

From what date will this support be paid?

This payment will be made automatically and will be in effect until December 31, 2028, with retroactive effect to January 1 of this year, with the retroactive part paid in the first month of support. This support is calculated by the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU) and paid by Social Security, via bank transfer, to the IBAN shown in its information system.

What did Antonio Costa say?

The head of government justified the implementation of these measures on a temporary basis with the fact that, in the opinion of the government, there is no reason “to postpone measures of an extraordinary and temporary nature to accompany a critical moment.
