A control of foreign substances in the middle of Friday yankees–reds The game led to the ejection of Reds manager David Bell after he fiercely protested the umpire team’s handling of the situation.
With the Yankees leading 1–0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt briefly walked out of the game after meeting all four umpires on his jog to the mound. Schmidt’s glove and right hand were thoroughly examined before he was told to go to the visitor’s bench to wash his hands.
During halftime, Bell and Yankees manager Aaron Boone came out to talk to the umpires for an explanation. Schmidt, who pitched four scoreless innings before the check, finally walked out of the dugout and underwent another quick check by home plate umpire Brian O’Nora before being cleared to return.
However, moments after Schmidt’s return, Bell returned to the field and got into a heated argument with O’Nora over the decision to allow the pitcher to continue playing. The trade soon led to O’Nora taking Bell out of the game, leading to more dialogue between the two before Cincy’s manager left.

Reds bench coach Freddie Benavides replaced Bell for the remainder of the contest.
Friday’s bizarre scene added another entry to the influx of MLB “sticky stuff” inspections this season.
