Former NFL agent David Canter is under investigation by the NFL Players Association following allegations that he engaged in a “form of bribery” during the NFL draft in April. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported Friday.

The NFLPA reportedly launched the investigation after learning that Canter allegedly offered access to “vacation properties” that he co-owns with his wife to various teams in exchange for recruiting one of his clients, according to Pryor. The agent’s alleged actions, described by sources as “unprecedented,” allegedly took place over this year’s draft weekend, which occurred from April 27-29.

According to ESPN, the investigation will focus on determining whether Canter’s activity violated “at least three different articles” in the NFLPA’s regulations for contract counselors, including one that prohibits “engaging in illegal conduct and/or conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation”. or other activity that would reflect negatively on his fitness as a contract advisor or jeopardize his effective representation of NFL players.”

Canter, who is the president of soccer for New York-based agency GSE Worldwide, represented 21 prospects this year, including 2023 “Mr. Irrelevant” and Rams seventh-round defensive end Desjuan Johnson. If the NFLPA finds him in violation of his guidelines, Canter could face strong discipline that can mean fines, suspension or loss of his agent’s certification, according to ESPN.

In response to the allegations, Canter’s attorney, Adam Kenner, released a statement late Friday proclaiming his client’s innocence. Kenner said they expect the issue to be “resolved shortly.”

“We are aware that the NFLPA is investigating communications between my client and various members of the administrative staff of certain NFL teams. Mr. Canter committed no crime and is fully cooperating with the NFLPA. We hope that the situation will be resolved shortly, ”he read in the statement, via ESPN.

As one of the most recognizable agents in football, Canter will continue to be a topic of interest as the NFLPA investigation continues. In addition to his rookie clients, Canter has a portfolio that includes NFL stars such as Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence and Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard.
