New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted an eight-week bail to Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son Ashish in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence that left eight people dead.

A panel of Judges Surya Kant and JK Maheshwari ordered that Ashish not stay in either Uttar Pradesh or Delhi during the bail period.

On October 3, 2021, eight people were killed in Tikunia, Lakhimpur Kheri district, where violence erupted when farmers protested the visit of then Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya to the region.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Police FIR, four farmers were mowed down by an SUV Ashish was sitting in.

Following the incident, the driver of the SUV and two BJP employees were reportedly lynched by angry farmers. A journalist also died in the violence.

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on July 26 last year rejected Ashish Mishra’s bail application.

He had challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court.
