Der Überraschungscoup ist der georgischen Nationalmannschaft nicht gelungen in der Achtelfinal-Partie gegen die Spanier, die sich während der Gruppenphase in den Status des großen Turnierfavoriten hineingespielt haben. Aber einen Teil ihres Schreckens hat die Mannschaft von Trainer Luis de la Fuente schon verloren während des lange Zeit mühsamen 4:1-Siegs gegen den Außenseiter vom Schwarzen Meer, der alles andere war als ein entspannter EM-Sonntagsspaziergang.
Die Spiel-Analysten von Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann haben in Köln schönes Anschauungsmaterial zur Konteranfälligkeit der Spanier sammeln können für das Viertelfinalduell der DFB-Elf am Freitag (18.00 Uhr im F.A.Z.-Liveticker zur Fußball-EM und in der ARD). Und besonders effizient vor dem Tor sind die Passkünstler aus dem Südwesten Europas auch nicht wirklich. Erst ganz am Ende, als die Georgier wussten, dass ihre schöne Reise durch dieses Turnier zu Ende gehen würde, brach der Widerstand – und das Ergebnis wurde eindeutig.
Der Sieg war fraglos verdient, Spanien war das bessere Team, besonders zu Beginn und in der Schlussphase. Nach einer Viertelstunde hatten die Statistiker einen spektakulären Ballbesitzanteil von 90 Prozent ermittelt, die Georgier hatten gerade einmal 19 Pässe gespielt. Und nun hatte de la Fuente auch noch im dritten Gruppenspiel, als es um nichts mehr ging für sein Team, eine Art B-Elf nominiert, was auch ein gewisses Risiko barg.
