March 19th is not just Father’s Day. It is also “Rising Stars” day. Or, loosely translated, rising stars. And who are these stars?
Simply put, some of the most talented young musicians in Europe, selected by ECHO – a European network made up of prestigious European concert halls – will take to the stage of the Grand Auditorium of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundationin Lisbon, to give free rein to his talent.
The program features Vanessa Porter, one of the most versatile percussionists of her generation who performs at Gulbenkian Música with Swiss drummer Daniel Mudrack. Porter, despite being young, has already won a number of competitions, such as the prestigious August-Everding Music Competition (Munich). British saxophonist Jess Gilliam is another emerging star who, according to The Times, “spreads joy” in her performances. She is accompanied by the pianist James Baillieu, and they propose to revisit composers such as Meredith Monk, Kurt Weill or Francis Poulenc, among others.
Baritone James Newby was nominated for this year’s edition of Rising Stars by The Barbican Center and will be accompanied on stage by pianist Joseph Middleton. The program includes works by great composers such as Mahler, Mozart or Rachmaninov. Ukrainian Diana Tishchenko will prove, once again, why she is one of the most exciting violinists of recent years. Diana has performed as a soloist alongside major European orchestras and has performed at the Gulbenkian with pianist Anna Fedorova.
“Last but not the least”, the audience will also have the opportunity to hear the Aris Quartett, who will perform here emblematic works for strings by Mozart and Schubert, and an unpublished work by Misato Mochizuki, “in-side”, which results from an order by the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and Konzerthaus Dortmund, with the support of ECHO.
