Russia and the United States increased their confrontational rhetoric after the incident between a US drone and two Russian fighter jets and the case provided two pieces of evidence that analysts highlight as fundamental to understanding the war in Ukraine. On the one hand, there still seems to be some dialogue between the two countries; and on the other hand, any incident can be the start of a wider confrontation – or, put another way: the staging of an apparently fortuitous incident can lead to an escalation of the conflict.
In this case, the incident seems not just to be fortuitous. No one in their perfect understanding assumes that the United States, Ukraine and the group of countries that support them do not try to put in the field all the instruments likely to keep the information services up to date. Nor does anyone understand that Russia does not try to defend itself against this surveillance, namely by putting an end to these instruments.
