NAfter months of debate, Ukraine's parliament passed a new law on soldier mobilization on Thursday. It tightens the rules for registration of men of military age and provides for harsher penalties for men who evade registration.

This ends what is probably the most difficult parliamentary battle in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in 2022. It began last year, when it became clear that the counteroffensive against the occupiers announced by Kiev would hardly be successful. In December, President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly announced that the army needed half a million new soldiers; the topic is “sensitive”.
