The chairman of the Science Council is calling for a rethink. A university that accepts fewer new students and looks after them better must be rewarded and not punished through job cuts.
AAt first glance, the times of constantly growing student numbers seem to be over, but it is worth distinguishing between individual regions and subjects. Berlin continues to see student numbers growing, while in Brandenburg they are steadily declining. The same applies to most East German states with the exception of Thuringia, which was able to stabilize its student numbers by relocating a private international university from Bad Honnef to Erfurt.
Student numbers are falling in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as in Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, while they are rising slightly in Bavaria, which is solely due to international students. The numbers are relatively stable in Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland, Hamburg and Bremen.
