US PGA Championship 2023: First round delayed by frost – live | US PGA

Yes, it may be mid-May, but this is upstate New York, and an overnight frost has set us back a couple of hours. The first group will now play at 8:50am (1:50pm BST), with revised tee times below. More from PA:

The game was scheduled to start at 7am local time (12pm BST), but predictions of an overnight frost proved accurate. Tournament organizers released a statement Thursday morning that said: “Due to frost, all Oak Hill Country Club practice facilities and golf course are currently closed.

“To protect the playing surfaces, everyone on the site must stay off the grass and the gates will not be opened until the frost is gone,” the statement added. “Start times for the first round will begin approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes after the practice facility opens.”

There are two players defending the Wanamaker Trophy in Oak Hill this week. Well, something like that.

There’s reigning champion Justin Thomas, of course. JT won his second PGA Championship in record fashion last year at Southern Hills, going seven strokes on the final day to beat Will Zalatoris in a playoff, after 71-hole leader Mito Pereira blew him out at drive to drink in 72. If this week’s Sunday shenanigans are half as dramatic, we’ll do pretty well.

But there’s also Phil Mickelson. Lefty won at Kiawah Island in 2021, edging out Brooks Koepka down the stretch to become the oldest major champion in history. He failed to officially defend that title last year, he walked off the field after some reckless LIV-inspired talk, and now that he’s back… well, of course He’s not really defending this week, but you know how elite athletes think, and in his mind he won’t have given up anything. His age (53 next month) and his form on the LIV tour suggest he doesn’t stand a chance; his scandalous second-place finish at the Masters last month is a different argument.

Other golfers are available! world number one and new Masters champion Jon Rahm; world number two fit Scottie Scheffler; Jordan Spieth, trying to complete his career slam; the Smith and Young Houses; reigning US Open champion and recent Heritage Matt Fitzpatrick; the speedy Brooks Koepka and his glacially paced nemesis Patrick Cantlay (preferably in the final pairing on Sunday for some comedic fireworks, come on golf gods so be it); the resurgent Jason Day; a European charge from Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry or Tyrrell Hatton; some heroics at the home of Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Tony Finau or Collin Morikawa; a possible coup in Korea courtesy of Tom Kim, Im Sung-jae or Kim Si-woo. Oh, and taking on the role of Rory McIlroy, a lovable but terribly frustrating flop in Sergio Garcia’s absence.
