Vote to expel George Santos brought down by the House GOP

On Tuesday, it looked like George Santos’ wild season in the House of Representatives was coming to an end. Democrats filed a motion to hold a vote on whether or not to expel the serial fabulist from the chamber. It was unlikely that he would succeed; expulsion requires a two-thirds supermajority. What would happen is that anyone who voted to keep the scheme incomplete and legislator already accused would be on the record. But the Republican Party found another way to avoid responsibility.

according to The New York Times, House Republicans blocked the vote on Wednesday. Instead, they left the matter elsewhere and referred it to the House Ethics Committee, which has already spent months investigating the guy who lied about his mother’s death in the 9/11 attacks.

The vote to thwart the vote was cast along party lines. But why would the House GOP defend a guy who lied to get to a government concert and who was indicted last week on 13 counts of, among other crimes, wire fraud, illegal money transactions, theft of public funds and lies about financial disclosures? ? He Times he speculates that it’s because the Republicans have such a small majority in the chamber that they can’t even afford to lose a guy who make up stories about being a college volleyball champion.

And so, Santos lives to see another stint in a job he lied to get, and House Republicans may still have to take a stand on someone who tried to hide that he was once a drag queen.
