DLast year, German police recorded significantly more suspected politically motivated attacks on refugees, according to a report. This was reported by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper on Wednesday, citing data from the Federal Interior Ministry that had been requested by left-wing politician Clara Bünger. Accordingly, security agencies recorded a total of 2,378 such acts, including 313 violent crimes, and 219 people were injured.

The number of attacks is higher than since 2016

According to NOZ, more crimes against refugees were registered in 2016. The numbers also showed an almost doubling compared to the previous year, with 1,248 attacks on refugees in 2022. Security agencies also recorded 180 crimes against refugee accommodation, the highest number since 2017, according to the Interior Ministry.

For Bünger, the “tremendous increase in crime” is no surprise. Against the background of the EU's tougher asylum policy, the federal government's tougher deportation rules and the AfD's success, Bünger said: “It is no wonder that racists feel emboldened in such a social situation to act on widespread resentment and attack refugees. .”
