First you dream about her and suddenly she appears at the door, disappointed. This retirement situation, which many employees feared, also worried him a lot, says Yaron Goldstein. He especially feared that his work as a data scientist would leave behind the daily structure and meaning of life.

But when he took the step towards retirement at just 36 years old, his worries proved unfounded.

“Honestly, I don't know how I could live before,” Goldstein tells Business Insider. Even when he was retired, he constantly lacked time to pursue all of his passions and make his dreams come true.

Goldstein traveled constantly to the US for work and barely saw them

Since he spent practically his entire life in Germany, the first thing he did when he retired was plan his trip. He has already been to the United States between 15 and 20 times for work. “[Aber] “I only knew New York and Silicon Valley, and nothing else!” says Goldstein.

So he went on a grand tour of the United States and fulfilled a long-held dream by attending the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting. The death of his co-president Charles Munger shortly thereafter confirmed his decision to remain retired and increase the joy of life rather than money.

“You can't put off fulfilling your bucket list indefinitely,” says Goldstein. “Because: sooner or later [das Leben] on!”

Goldstein attends college with high school graduates

To make the most of the time he has left, he follows a set daily structure, Goldstein says. She wakes up at seven in the morning, goes to bed for an hour, and then starts the day with homemade Japanese tea.

He likes to listen to financial podcasts while enjoying tea. He also reviews his financial portfolio in the morning. He goes swimming two or three days a week.

He also enrolled in a university to study physics and attends lectures with recent high school graduates. “Now I study around freshmen, which is a very, very strange experience,” Goldstein says.

He also plans to write a children's book on data science. If he later becomes a father, his daughter should be able to read the book and understand his previous work. He also tries to teach the young people around him how to “grow financially.”

Goldstein is not a representative of retirees

While Goldstein enjoys and takes advantage of his free time from a relatively young age, many retirees can barely stay afloat even after a full working life.

According to data from the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, more than ten million pensioners in Germany (more than half of all people receiving income from the statutory pension fund) receive less than 1,100 euros in pension per month.
