bAt least five people died in an accident with a bus on the A9 near Leipzig. The police reported it on request. Many were also injured in the accident on Wednesday.

The Flixbus passenger bus had an accident on Wednesday morning between the Wiedemar junction and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz. For an unknown reason, the vehicle went off the road and flipped onto its side.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this accident and their families,” a Flixbus spokesperson said when asked on Wednesday. The long-distance bus was on its way from Berlin to Zurich in the morning. According to Flixbus, there were 53 passengers and two drivers on board.

Several rescue helicopters and numerous ambulances are in use. The highway is closed in both directions. Motorists were asked to keep the emergency lane clear. Schkeuditzer Kreuz is located at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The A9 is an important north-south highway connecting Berlin and Munich.

Hospitals are preparing for large-scale operations

Meanwhile, area hospitals are preparing for a major operation. The emergency department has been notified and operating and diagnostic rooms are being prepared and are available, a spokeswoman for Leipzig's Diakonissen Hospital said upon request. In addition, the control center has been informed of its capacity to receive patients.

Saxony's transport minister, Martin Dulig, was appalled. “My thoughts are with the families of the victims and the injured. “I would like to thank the many emergency services on the ground who are providing quick assistance,” the SPD politician said on Wednesday.
