A few weeks ago, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach had to say goodbye to his mother Gertrud Lauterbach forever. As the politician now confirms, his mother died at the age of 89.

Mourning Karl Lauterbach. As the Federal Minister of Health confirmed to “Bild” only recently, he lost his mother Getrud on March 24, 2024. He was 89 years old. The politician did not reveal more details about his death. “I ask for privacy and respect for grief,” Lauterbach said. His mother had been in need of care since 2022.

Lauterbach also told “Bild” at the time: “My mother is very satisfied with her care – both with the nursing assistant who helps her at home and with the nursing home, where Lauterbach goes once or twice a week.” Most recently, he had a close relationship with his mother, whom he visited regularly and also shared photos together on his Instagram account. Among other things, he published a photo of him getting vaccinated during the corona pandemic. “My almost 86-year-old mother was just vaccinated at the Düren Vaccination Center by colleagues Christina Huerkamp and Franziska Botz,” Lauterbach wrote about her snapshot. He was very grateful for the vaccination and had been waiting for this liberating moment for a long time.

This is how Karl Lauterbach grew up

Karl Lauterbach was born on February 21, 1963 in Birkesdorf, today in the district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia. The doctor is the son of dairy worker Wilhelm Lauterbach, also deceased, and his wife Gertrud. He grew up in simple circumstances and, in his own words, “in a strict Roman Catholic home.” Despite his very good academic performance, he was initially only recommended to enter secondary school due to his background. However, he later transferred to high school and after graduating from high school began a research career as a specialist in human medicine, leading to a professorship at the University of Cologne in the mid-1990s.
