EIn 2008, Emu launched a firefighting operation in Gevelsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. An escaped smooth-breasted bird wandered through town in a panic on Sunday, the local fire department said Monday. The ambulance caught him with a net and temporarily placed him in a transport cage.

The origin of the emu was initially unclear. While the firefighters wanted to chase him to the game gate, passers-by recognized the animal and gave the owner a crucial tip. The bird named Tanja was then returned to her home enclosure.

Emus are large flightless birds native to Australia.
