In The Perfect Dinner, Giorgio tries to be a Mallorcan bon vivant, but Suzette's crepe goes horribly wrong.
He's actually from Friedrichroda in Thuringia, but Giorgio (37) has been living in Mallorca for six years and is fully committed to the casual Mediterranean lifestyle. Sunglasses in loosely wavy hair, he swims in the sea at 6:30 in the morning (“Everything is still in the golden light”) or acts as a diving “jewel rescuer” with a metal detector: “I love to be with people again, to connect with their lost objects,” says Giorgio.
In his professional life as well, he operates between art and practical value. As an “absolute design freak” (“Fish knives are an unnecessary invention”), the industrial designer runs an advertising agency in Mallorca. The rest of his life is also connected with beauty: his apartment has a fantastic sea view and his girlfriend Caro (27), who is ten years younger than him, is a beauty from a picture book.
When it comes to culinary delights, Giorgio, who calls the balcony grill his “plancha” and the serving “platen”, does not compromise on the “Perfect Dinner” on the Balearic island: “I have nothing against vegetables, but only fish or meat as a side dish.” Could he end up with vegetarian Elisa, 37? She's looking forward to it: “She's going to bleed tonight.”
Motto: Spanish culinary treasures – a feast for the senses
Starter: Gambas al ajillo
Main course: Rodaballo a la plancha
Dessert: Crepe Suzette
According to Giorgio, the “media” is to blame for the Ballermann cliché.
Giorgio buys the Mallorcan treasures of his new home in Palma's Santa Catalina market (Angie, 27: “Very good oysters there”). Almost like a local resident, he demonstratively fraternizes with “his” fishmonger – albeit in English.
Between advertising design, functional fitness, enjoying the sunset and diving for treasure, there's not much time left to learn Spanish – that, and keeping to herself in a mostly German bubble, she has in common with the entire Majorcan troupe. But when it comes to an aperitif with a sea view, everyone agrees: “The island has much more to offer than just a bowler.” And according to Giorgio, who is to blame for this cliché? Of course – “media”!
“The magic is in the variety,” says the worldly host. And not in the details or the painstaking preparation: bread and dessert ice cream bought. Otherwise, Giorgio relies on prawns baked in garlic (for Elisa's mushrooms), grilled halibut (for Elisa's halloumi) and Suzette's prawns in orange sauce.
“I have freed myself from everything unnecessary here”
Giorgio actually wants to flambé them with a lot of cognac and three seconds, but the “babies” (Giorgio) do not want and do not want to light a fire. And so Giorgio's evening is particularly impressive precisely because of the location, but the food is also good, according to Julia (41): “I can't complain.” And because the view was so beautiful, the ladies scored a total of 34 points – currently second only to Angie.
However, dinner in Mallorca continues to exude the air of expatriate luxury – even as house and pool owner and yacht rental agent Farina (43) emphasizes: “I have freed myself from everything unnecessary here. I don't want to give in to rampant consumerism – it won't make you happier in the end.
