Streaming giant Netflix wants to offer an extensive package of Indian movies and series in 2024. Bollywood fans all over the world are in for a treat.
After producing a lot of content in South Korea in 2023, Netflix is now launching its foray into Bollywood. The streaming service provider unveiled its schedule for 2024 at a gala event in Mumbai. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is looking to further expand into the Indian market. This year's program package includes eight feature films and 14 series from various genres.
“Our customers have given a clear vote”
Titled 'Next on Netflix: Blockbuster Entertainment Ka Next Level', the launch of the program in Mumbai was moderated by Monika Shergill, VP Content, Netflix India. “2023 was our most successful year. Our customers have given a clear voice: they love stories from India and around the world in all genres and emotions,” said Shergill. “We want to take the entertainment factor for our viewers to the next level in the 2024 program year. The biggest names and freshest voices in the Indian entertainment industry bring their most extraordinary films, series and documentaries to Netflix. And we can't wait for you to see them.”
A successful Indian filmmaker makes a series for Netflix
Headlining the 2024 program is Bollywood blockbuster director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's (61) streaming series debut, Heeramandi: Diamond Bazaar. The eight-part series is an epic drama. It describes the life of Tawaif entertainers in the red light district of Lahore during the Indian independence movement.
Netflix also announced the next three projects in collaboration with hit studio Yash Raj Films. The “Mandala Murders” series is a crime thriller, according to Netflix, “in which the perpetrators, victims, survivors and investigators are intricately connected. Another popular title is 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijacking.'” The film recreates the longest hijacking in Indian history. to early success with Indian documentaries, documentaries such as The Great Indian Kapil Show starring India's 'King of Comedy' Kapil Sharma stand out here.
