Representatives of an ethnic rebel army confirmed to the FAZ on Tuesday that they had captured an important base near the city of Myawaddy near the border with Thailand a few days ago. According to press reports, a complete capture of the city in the state of Kayin opposite the Thai border town of Mae Sot is imminent. A few dozen soldiers from the 275th Infantry Battalion are said to be staying there. The city is of strategic importance as a large part of the overland trade with the neighboring country is carried out through it.
According to a representative of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), the soldiers captured the Thanganyinaung base on Friday after a five-hour battle. A total of 617 soldiers and their families surrendered to the rebels. Photos showed numerous confiscated weapons and ammunition stocks. The Southeast Asian country, strategically located between China, India, Thailand and Bangladesh, has been plunged into a downward spiral of chaos and violence since the military's coup against the elected civilian government in February 2021.
