SEDAN taz | Hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated against right-wing extremism in more than 100 demonstrations and rallies this weekend. This is shown by a taz analysis of the demo numbers.

In Berlin alone there were at least 150,000 people in the streets, and more than 340,000 people attended many other demonstrations across the country. This number is a lower limit for which we normally use the lowest figures provided by the police. Taking into account the often higher figures of the organizers, almost 700,000 people were present on Friday and Saturday.

Events with a five-figure number of participants were held in several cities: more than 30,000 people took to the streets in Freiburg and Dresden, 25,000 in Nuremberg and Augsburg and more than 10,000 in Krefeld, Mainz and Saarbrücken.

As was the case last weekend, most events were smaller demonstrations across the country, with several hundred or thousands of participants. In 69 places there were four-digit protests, and in another 41 communities the number was three figures.

The demonstrations continue on Sunday with more than 60 dates throughout the country. The wave of protests was sparked by revelations by the Correctiv research center about a meeting of neo-Nazis at the end of November, which included some politicians from the far-right AfD party, as well as individual members of the CDU and the very conservative party. The Union of Values participated in Potsdam. These were also plans to denaturalize and expel non-white people and people with foreign roots. Last weekend more than 840,000 people demonstrated.

We have been collecting the dates of the current demonstrations against right-wing extremism for several days, also via the email address demo Notices@taz.de. So far we have received more than 450 suggestions. (Thank you to everyone who wrote to us!)

Since January 19, there have been around 700 demonstrations with a total of more than 2.6 million participants. Our data for the previous period is still very incomplete.
