EThe bearded monkey stolen from Leipzig Zoo has not yet been found. “The monkey is not back,” a police spokesman said Wednesday morning. The theft of a 15-year-old monkey made the news.

The missing female, named Ruma, was discovered on Easter Sunday morning, the zoo said. According to the police, unknown persons forcibly opened the cage and stole the animal on Sunday evening.

Criminal police then secured the tracks and alerted the bearded monkey, the Leipzig police station said on Tuesday.

Zoo director Jörg Junhold said they are very concerned about the animal's welfare. Bearded monkeys were among the animal species at high risk of extinction. The keeping and transportation of animals is regulated by the Washington Species Convention, so there are high requirements for the legal procurement of animals.

As a result of the break-in, security measures at the zoo were increased.
